It was (not) a very good year...

on Friday, December 28, 2007
I guess this would be my last blog update in 2007, so let's finish off this weird year on a high note:

2007. was difficult and unusually stressful for me, but I'd prefer to remember it for the few really good things that happened. Also, I'd like to think that I made a gradual and definite improvement and progress with my artwork during the last 12 months. And while all those crappy New Year resolutions are usually broken and forgotten within first two weeks, I have intention to stick with few resolutions of my own.

So, to all the visitors of HammersonLand, especially the regular ones and those who are commenting:
I wish you a very happy, prosperous and successful New Year!
See ya in 2008! :)

Christmas with ELFIS

on Monday, December 17, 2007
Let me introduce Elfis - the king of Santa Rock, and his band of jolly Elves.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the visitors of HammersonLand.

And don't forget to check this small gallery of my Christmas cards from previous years.

Kristen!!

on Sunday, December 16, 2007
Kristen McCabe is a very funny and extremely talented artist. Check her sketch blog for some mighty good stuff. Many other colleagues and artists have drawn a portrait of Kristen, and this is my contribution to her personal gallery:

Is she feeling mesmerized or terrorized by this tiny harmless radioactive spider? A mystery that's going to puzzle the most eminent art critics of the future even more than La Gioconda's smile.

John & Yoko

on Saturday, December 08, 2007
Today's the 27-th anniversary (how time flies) of John Lennon's death. So, here's a quick caricature of John & Yoko, straight from the memory, without photo-reference. And be thankful that I haven't included the bottom half of the picture :)

Jesse

Jesse is a friend of mine. Also a talented cartoonist and puppeteer. Also a great guy. This is my attempt to make a portrait of him. And he will probably make his attempt to kill me because of that :)

Teleportation trouble

on Thursday, November 15, 2007
Again, an old comic strip. The original version was made back in 1997, and it looked crappy. This slightly less crappy version is a remake from almost five years ago. The color is brand new. It's a funny story... I still like it.
Click on the picture to see the original version in Croatian, or click HERE to read the comic in English.

The inevitable questions: who are these two people? Are they real? Was that a real-life incident that actually happened? Can anybody sell me a functional teleportation system in good condition? What does the mysterious acronym BZB means? You'll find out one day. Good night...

5 minutes of fame

on Saturday, November 10, 2007
Andy Warhol once said: "in the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes". And I say, 5 minutes is enough for some people. On the following pages, I'll show you the whole lifetime of my main hero, including his obligatory 5 minutes of fame.
This story won the second prize on the annual Croatian comics-fest CRŠ (one of my three prizes on this festival so far - a record of some kind). Some people think it's my best comic ever... maybe it is, but I'd prefer to think that best is yet to come. I made it very quickly because of the tight deadline, so it took me only 10 days to finish it. Because of that, there are some rough spots and drawing mistakes that are making me bristle when I read it now. Still, it came out pretty well, under the circumstances.

Here is the original in Croatian, and don't be afraid to check it out even if you don't understand the language. Maybe I'll upload the English version next week, if I manage to successfully resolve few problems in translation. Some story elements and jokes will be inevitably lost in another language, unfortunately.

People find this story either incredibly depressing or hilarious... it depends on whose side you're on. And if you loved this one, don't miss my other suicidal comic strip. Perhaps I need to make another one, and have a real suicide trilogy in my opus :) But I don't like to draw depressing stuff (though I like to read it sometimes)...

Birthday Time Is Here Again...

on Thursday, November 08, 2007
Well, another friend is celebrating birthday!
Kali Fontecchio is a girl of many talents. She's a cartoonist, painter, photographer, movie director, singer, guitarist, actress, a swordfighter... the list is infinite. She's currently studying the dangerous ancient secrets of the rubber-hose animation.
Kali is funny and gifted, take a look at her blog and don't forget to wish her a Happy Birthday, because she's having sixty... I beg your pardon, twenty-two years today.
Here's my B-day present...

on Wednesday, October 31, 2007
Another Halloween post... Well, it IS Halloween today, so what else have you expected? A picture of Santa Claus, maybe? :)
It's an old drawing, from 2002. Actually, that is a panel taken from one of my old comics, but it works as a stand-alone illustration too. The color has been added today, and all the drawing mistakes were made five years ago. Enjoy!

This is not Yogi Bear

Here are two panels from that notorious Robin Hood story I made few years ago. I selected two least offensive pictures from the whole comic. I'd be probably forever banned from Blogger if I try to post the rest :)

Spacegirl returns

on Tuesday, October 16, 2007
Technically, this is called "cheating" :)
Instead of a brand new drawing for my 100-th post, I'm serving you an refurbished old one. This drawing was originally made last October and it was black & white, but I always thought it deserved a full color treatment. So, here it is... a pretty sight for your tired eyeballs.

Do I Look Like a F*ckin' Clown?!?

on Thursday, October 11, 2007
"What do ya mean, funny? I mean, funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh... I'm here to f*ckin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?"

Here's a Joe Pesci caricature for a friend who's a big fan of this terrific actor:

Hey, I just realized this is my 99-th post. What kind of thing should I do to amuse you or make you laugh in the next post? Any special requests or desires? Let's hear those four or five people who are still commenting here :)

Remixed and remastered

on Saturday, September 22, 2007
I'm currently in some big stinkin' mess, and won't be able to prepare a new update for at least two more days. So, what else can I do in such situation, except to sell you the same old stuff for the second time :)
The old HammersonLand veterans have already seen these drawings, but strictly in black & white form. These are some quick colorizations made last month. Decide for yourself whether you prefer the originals, or these "remixed and remastered" versions.

I kinda like this Brangelina caricature better, because the very subtle shading and color gave it some depth and 3D feeling that was lacking in the original drawing.

Here's a caricature of another MySpace friend. She's got a face that's very challenging and tough to draw. I made her inadvertently look much older, but the final result ain't too bad for the first attempt at a new face.

YULFO!

on Friday, September 14, 2007
YULFO is not an ultimate obscenity in some extraterrestrial language. Yulfo is a MySpace friend, and a funny guy. And while it's not his birthday yet, I couldn't resist the challenge to immortalize his face in a caricature portrait. So, without much further talk, here's YULFO! In glorious YULFOCOLOR!

Calm down ladies, he's married!

That's was a quick attempt to make a Robert De Niro caricature, straight from the memory, without using any photo reference. I tried this just as an experiment, and I hope it looks enough like him. What do you think?

The King Is Gone But He's Not Forgotten...

on Friday, August 17, 2007
... is this the story of a Johnny Rotten?
No, it's just my first half-serious attempt of doing Elvis Presley caricature. The only good thing I can say about this one is: the next time will be much better. The first time is almost always rotten :)

Now playing: "Heartbreak Hotel" - John Cale (1975)

Dancing Girl

on Monday, August 13, 2007
This was initiated yesterday as a quick pencil sketch, just one of my daily drawing exercises. I liked the drawing, and decided to make a finished picture out of it. I don't know which version (blue or orange background) functions better, so here are both:

Update: here's the third variation, based on the same pencil sketch. The pose is similar, and the girl is different. Just an experiment... I prefer the first two.

R.I.P.

on Tuesday, July 31, 2007
Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007)
Michelangelo Antonioni (1912-2007)

Two giants of cinema, both gone within the same day. Unbelievable! I'm devastated :-(
These were two fearless and uncompromising artists who achieved the maximum of expression in their field, and I have endless admiration for both of them, for many years. Here are some interesting links worth checking out, if you want to find out more about Bergman and Antonioni:

  • Senses of Cinema essay about Bergman
  • A huge tribute to Bergman at Guardian website
  • Ingmar Bergman Face to Face website
  • Bergmanorama: The Magic Works of Ingmar Bergman
  • Woody Allen talks about Bergman (1)
  • Woody Allen talks about Bergman (2)
  • Roger Ebert's tribute to Bergman

  • Senses of Cinema essay about Antonioni
  • NY Times Antonioni article from August 1,2007.
  • A tribute to Antonioni from the Criterion Collection blog
  • Interesting reminiscence from a musician John Foxx, about his early '80s collaboration with Antonioni

  • And, here's a small tribute to one of the departed masters of cinema, no matter how inappropriate it may be. This motif from a Bergman movie has been parodied to death :) It's an old comic I originally made in 1995, and this is re-drawn and improved version from four years ago. Sorry for the text in Croatian... I don't have English version at the moment. Enjoy the pictures.

This is not my return to HammersonLand. You'll have to wait 'till September for the regular updates here. In the meantime, you can find me HERE.

The Greatest Movie You've Never Seen

    on Tuesday, July 17, 2007
It's out on DVD right now! And this guy's in it:

    IMDB link

Billy Wilder's "lost" masterpiece "Ace in the Hole", never before released in any home video format, and rarely seen for decades has finally appeared today, in the form of a fantastic two-DVD set from Criterion. I had a great luck to catch a rare TV broadcast several years ago, and since then it became one of my all-time favorite movies.

Do yourself a favor, and buy it here:

    Crimes of Paris

    on Thursday, July 12, 2007
You're not the girl next door or a girl from France...

Ugh, I don't like this drawing very much. There are some mistakes, and drawing looks squashed and odd in this scanned version (it's much better in original). I really wanted to make a killer caricature of PH, but I feel rather bad and exhausted today, so the result ain't what it could have been. Some of you may like it though, so here it is. Maybe I'll fix this drawing when I have more time... or maybe I'll just leave it alone and make some new stuff (as usually happens).

Hey, do you want to see the funniest Paris Hilton photo ever?

Unfortunately, it's fake :) Don't know who made it. Only those of you who recognize the album cover will get the joke.
