Here are two cleaned-up pencil drawings, augmented with little bit of tinkering in Photoshop. Drawings are not inked, and there are some mistakes and rough parts that will be fixed later. The final illustration will contain both characters and many other things. I'll post more of this work in progress later, during the week.

i'm sorry for the mess above! i have to read more carefully before i post a comment!
can you be more specific on the tinkering? cause when i do something with photoshop it looks like crap! the lines aren't inked but did you do something to them digitally?
and did you multiply the layers?

Yes, I put the Multiply layer and add on it all the gray areas and shading. Before that, the scanned pencil drawings are adjusted with Levels function, to make the lines look darker and cleaner. Basically, that's the all work done in Photoshop for these two drawings. Since I don't have the graphic tablet at the moment, I rarely draw lines directly in Photoshop using the pen and brush tools. If I do, it's most often just to patch some mistakes in the original drawing. Also, I make the panel outlines for comics directly in Photoshop.

Yeah, in some cases such things might destroy the picture, but here it works well within the context of the drawing :-) The arms and the legs are in fact the mechanical extensions, because the guy in the space-suit is barely 5' tall.
