Yeah, it's THAT time of the year... so, here's a small gallery of my Xmas cards.
Happy Holidays and my best wishes to all the visitors of HammersonLand (even to those @$#*% who are leaving the spam comments for cheap Viagra and Xanax almost every day).

The King of Pop

Acid Comics

Here's some really ancient crap... from 1999, can you believe it? Lot of people seem to like this one. It even won the first prize for the best short comic at some competition. Today, it still looks OK to me. The drawing and color ain't too bad, especially considering it was one of my first serious attempts at coloring comics with computer. Today, I would surely use less garish colors.

We lost three days ago another of the great ones. Here's a quick sketch as a tribute to this great movie director. RIP

More Grimaldi!

on Wednesday, November 22, 2006

Here's another little bit from that epic clown story I'm currently doing. What kind of life-altering event is going to happen to our hero when he opens that door? What dark mystery is awaiting the seedy middle-aged clown? Maybe it's just a postman? I won't tell anything... If you want to know more, you'll have to wait until the "Freedom" anthology is out. I'll let you know when that happens... the tentative release date is somewhere in January or February, next year. You can find more info about this in my earlier post

Several species of small furry animals...

Here's another tribute... to one of the greatest rock bands in history. I used to be a huge fan years ago, and still have the great respect for those guys. Here are three of them, and it probably won't be too hard to guess what's the name of the band in question. Check back this post in the following few days, as I intend to add the remaining two members.

It's been a long time since I posted the last group of caricatures. Here's a recent one. There will be lot of talk about this guy, very soon. Is he going to be praised or ridiculed for his performance? I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks.
What's his name?

Hello Bing, how's your brother?

on Saturday, October 28, 2006
This is just a tribute, to the greatest comic book in the world! Well, maybe not THE greatest, but a really good one neverthenless. At least, it was good during its heyday (the first 7 years approximately), with a long painful decline in quality afterwards. Too bad that most people never had a chance to get familiar with this comic. You see, it's well known only in Italy (its country of origin), and Croatia or any part of ex-Yugoslavia, where it enjoyed a sensational success for the last 34 years. While I certainly don't have to introduce the characters to any visitors from those countries, here are some articles in English that will fill that task for anybody else who's interested to know more:

Alan Ford Wikipedia article
Alan Ford: Big in the Balkans
Pictures of the main characters

I haven't tried to draw these bastards since the high school, so please excuse any inaccuracies and clumsy bits... I'm not very satisfied with the way I drew few characters on this picture. Also, for some odd reason, this drawing looks much better in the original, than in scanned version.

The main reason for this tribute is the fact that the co-author of "Alan Ford", writer Max Bunker (Luciano Secchi) is going to be the special guest at the comics convention here in Croatia, next month. Sadly, Roberto Raviola (a.k.a. Magnus), the formidable artist responsible for the first 75 episodes of "Alan Ford" passed away in 1996. leaving after him the large quantity of brilliant work in many different genres.

The Hitch-Hiker (version 2)

This is a complete illustration, based on two pencil sketches posted last Monday. Maybe I'll correct a thing or two later, and perhaps try to do a color version. Click on the picture to see the full size.

Here are two cleaned-up pencil drawings, augmented with little bit of tinkering in Photoshop. Drawings are not inked, and there are some mistakes and rough parts that will be fixed later. The final illustration will contain both characters and many other things. I'll post more of this work in progress later, during the week.

The Great Grimaldi

on Friday, October 13, 2006
As promised yesterday, here's a preview of a new comic I'm working on. It's a six page story written by Ed Berridge and drawn by yours truly, in the usually hideous style. This story called "Viva Grimaldi!" is going to be a part of the small press UK comics anthology entitled "Freedom", an exciting project initiated by Christine Harper .
This is my first collaboration with another writer since 1998, and it has proven to be really good and challenging. Ed described this story (based on a dream he had) as "Eraserhead with clown" and that was enough to make me interested in doing it. It's a surreal, nightmarish and slightly disturbing story about the seedy middle aged clown, down on his luck.

What you see here is the nearly definitive version of page one, with just several small interventions left to be done. And that's all I'm going to show now... for the rest, you'll have to order the "Freedom" anthology. There's no firm release date at the moment, and I guess the anthology will be out before the end of this year. More info about this project will be posted on Christine Harper's blog , and here, in the nearest future.

They're rich, you're not! Can you guess their names? Let's see some comments.

This is the 80-million dollar man. The visitors from US might have difficulties to recognize him... he never really made it in the States, but he's a big star in the rest of the world. Whether it's the bigger loss for the US, or the rest of the world, it's open for the debate...

And here's the zillion dollar woman.

Greetings to visitors from the outer space! We are the most beautiful people on planet Earth.

He's the most perfect creature in the whole universe. An OT-Level VIII, you know! He's got supernatural powers. He can levitate, walk through the walls, walk on the water, jump on the couch... and also send migraine and negative energy to all the nasty cartoonists who dared to draw shameful undignified pictures of his Highness.
NOTE: I'm not too satisfied with this picture. I made it a month ago, and it could have been better, with stronger likeness. It's here because of popular demand. Everybody loves to laugh at this guy :-)

Here's another birthday card, this time for Gordan Calma, a friend and one of the world's biggest fans of a certain spinach-eating one-eyed sailor-man.

© Popeye, Olive Oyl and Swee'Pea are properties of King Features Syndicate and the Hearst Corporation

Take a look at Gordan's superb web site dedicated to Popeye , with the main focus on the legendary Popeye cartoons from the '30s and early '40s produced by Max & Dave Fleischer.

And speaking of classic cartoons, my friend Andrea Ippoliti (also known as Duck Dodgers) has a fantastic blog dedicated to the golden age of animation . His blog contains a huge archive of screenshots and posts about cartoons from the period between late '20s and early '60s, with occasional articles about more recent stuff too. Many rare, impossible to find, or even banned cartoons are presented there with the large number of high quality screenshots. I collaborated with Andrea in various occasions (also did a caricature of him) and since the beginning of September, I became a team member on his blog.

This is a drawing for Katie Rice, a cartoonist of extraordinary talent who's celebrating her birthday today.

It's Mickey!!!

on Saturday, September 02, 2006
Here's one of the most beloved and iconic characters of the last century...

Of course, you all remember that classic opening of the MM cartoons, with the giant Mickey head looking cheerful and smiling at the audience. Now, imagine for a moment what would happen if you were greeted with something like this...

Try to imagine what kind of cartoon would follow after this shabby creature from hell hit the screen. He's looking rather miserable here, almost like he's been subjected to some unspeakable atrocities, or indulged in the vilest vices known to man/mouse-kind. This horrible Bizarro-Mickey is my entry for the project called "Everybody needs to draw Mickey once" . It's a funny idea and a nice initiative, presented at this web-site . Just click on the link and take a look. You can vote for your favorites or perhaps send your own Mickey. So far there are 217 entries, and the number is increasing every day. So take a pencil (or even mouse) in your hand and draw a Mickey, at least once in your life.

This is the end, my imaginary friend

And please excuse my not so perfect English. If I made any grammatical mistakes in this comic, let me know and I'll add the necessary corrections.

Caricatures 9

on Sunday, August 27, 2006
Well, I'm back from the vacation. Anybody missed me? No? Who cares, here's the first update after the two weeks absence. Again, these are some Hollywood personalities. Try to identify them and write a comment. These drawings are perhaps not as crazy or exaggerated as I would prefer, but I think I achieved here a very solid likeness with the real people.

Caricatures 8

on Tuesday, August 15, 2006
Here are the last two pictures for this month. I'm on vacation, and the blog is not going to be updated for the next couple of weeks (this time for real). What I need now is your feedback. First, try to identify these two personalites pictured below. I won't give any hint, just try to recognize them from the caricatures. Also, give some comments about the blog in general, what you like, what you want to see more of, etc. I'm especially interested in your opinion about the caricatures, are they well done and recognizable, or embarrassingly bad, should I continue doing them or stop completely. Lot of people have visited this blog, but very few of them wrote any comments so far, and I would like to hear as many honest opinions as possible. I will be able to read the comments during the vacation and eventually respond.
Thank you!

Caricatures 7

Here are more caricatures of the Hollywood movie stars.

They called her "Pretty Woman"...

She's pretty too. And really difficult to draw. It's especially hard to draw her eyes and mouth without giving her a very mean expression that immediately ruins the similarity. This attempt looks OK, though it could be better. Maybe next time...

There's something irritating about this guy's appearance. Don't you want to punch him in the face? Not a bad actor, though.

The same guy, in his recent, more "mature" image. He's pictured together with his great buddy. That other guy was rather hard to draw, because of his bland and rather expressionless face. I hope he's recognizable enough here.

Everybody's favorite Hollywood weirdo in two completely different versions. Which one do you prefer? Can you recognize him at all? Am I soon going to receive a nasty phone call from his lawyers?

Another very popular actor... shares the same wacky religion with the guy above.

Caricatures 6

on Sunday, August 06, 2006
Yeah, I know... I promised to make no updates until the end of this month, but due to some unexpected circumstances, my vacation has been postponed for the next week. So, here are the portraits of some of the most beautiful Hollywood movie-stars :-)
Can you guess their names? I will add more pictures in the following days.

And be sure to visit Grigor Eftimov's blog . This guy is unbelievable, he made some of the greatest and most original portrait caricatures I've ever seen, and also he's an amazingly good realistic painter. I saw his work yesterday for the first time, and it inspired me to make these new caricatures.

The insane clown

on Tuesday, August 01, 2006

This will be the last update for some time. I'm going to vacation soon, and the regular activity on this blog will resume by the end of this month. Perhaps I'll add an update or two before that, but nothing is guaranteed. However, I'll be able to read and respond to your comments and e-mail messages, so don't hesitate to write if you have something to say. There are going to be many new surprises on HammersonLand starting from the late August, including a sneak peek at a secret project I'm working on for some time.
